Here are just some of the tools Matt Fox recommends for any painting project.
Matt Fox used to own his own painting contracting business and had a basic painting kit for everyone that worked for him. Here, he lists the tools needed for a professional paint job every time:

  • The kit starts with a canvas drop cloth, which can absorb paint drips so they're not tracked around the room.

  • Next, you'll need blue painter's tape. This is a low-tack tape that works great to tape off baseboards and trim. Just remember to remove the tape while the paint is still wet so you don’t peel the fresh coat off the wall with it.

  • To make small nail-hole repairs, use a putty knife and flush spackling compound. Some 220-grit sandpaper is always handy to knock down any extra dried spackling.

  • For applying the paint to the wall, use a 2-1/2-inch angled sash brush for cutting in. A plastic paint pail and liner is the best way to carry paint around during this process. A paint tray with liners, a roller frame, 3/8-inch roller cover for flat to semi-smooth walls and an extension pole will give you all the tools to apply the product.

  • Finally, a sturdy platform ladder and a five-in-one tool, which comes in handy for opening/closing the paint and cleaning off the roller cover, complete the list.
