AfterMarcia Smith has been living in an attractive townhouse for one year. When her children grew to adulthood, she decided to downsize and is now enjoying her smaller abode. Her beautiful collection of international furnishings have warmed up the inside — making it very inviting — but the outside space lacks personality and comfort. With $10,000 and the help of a landscape designer, Smith would like to turn her empty patio into an eye-catching outdoor entertainment room.
After an initial meeting with Smith, each designer is given two weeks to come up with a plan that will transform her patio from basic to brilliant. Ruth Bracken presents a plan for a comfortable yet exciting outdoor room. Next, Pamela Berstler and Alex Stevens present their take on an exotic Moroccan hideaway. Lastly, Jeffrey Mintz presents a plan with lush plantings and rustic furniture.
Smith chooses the design team of Berstler and Stevens. After several months of construction, the patio is complete. With the meandering mosaic tile floor, new custom day bed, tile buffet, a custom mosaic end table and glass dining table, the area is now functional and beautiful. What was once a lackluster space cluttered with dying plants is now a warm and inviting terrace filled with color, elegance and life.
