Frameless cabinets have a comfortable, casual look, but also use space efficiently.
Host Joan Kohn tours the country kitchen of Dee Huddles, who completely remodeled her galley kitchen to open it up to wonderful views and connect it to the rest of the living area. Designer John Christopher helped her create an open plan that relies on the warmth of natural wood tones to create a relaxed, casual look.
  • Natural distressed pine cabinets are the dominant feature in the kitchen. The frameless design is very space-efficient and creates a comfortable country look. Open shelving for storage of large serving pieces breaks up the heaviness of so much wood.
  • The wood floor matches the cabinet in color. The floor in front of the fireplace is finished with large ceramic tiles that match the color of the wood floor and keep visual disruption to a minimum.
  • Countertops are done in large ceramic tile in a soft beige color that echoes the color of the cabinets. The backsplash is a plain 3" x 6" white tile.
  • The island is topped with a heavily veined granite. Four fluted legs add a furniture look to the large piece. Recessed areas on three sides are filled with stools for additional seating.
