Hide CaptionShow CaptionMake shutters look weathered with this paint technique.
Lee gives the plantation shutters Old-World appeal by first sanding them to create texture and depth after the paint is applied. Once the paint is dry, he gives the shutters a weathered look (figure E) by removing some of the paint with hardened paintbrushes. He attaches carved appliques to the sides for contrast and character. The consoles he got at the salvage store are placed behind each of the family’s two sofas and the chairs to create a simple sitting area against a wall. New window dressings and accessories tie the whole look together.
