Laurie and Sid Lomeli love the new living room they have added onto their home. Though they enjoy spending time in the room with their large family, they have been unsure how to make the space feel like home. Using the Lomelis' carved Spanish-style coffee table for inspiration, the Design on a Dime team intends to transform this cavernous space into a cozy Old-World oasis for less than $1,000.

The Dilemma
The addition gives the Lomelis plenty of open space where they can spend time with their family--in fact, they feel it's a little too open. They want their new living room to feel more intimate, but they don't know where to start. The back of the fireplace from the adjoining room protrudes into the space. They have tried to use it as a decorative spot for accessories, but it still seems out of place. They also have lots of floor and wall space, which leaves the room feeling a bit empty. The Solution
The team will revamp the room by giving the large expanse of wall space the appearance of extra windows by adding distressed plantation shutters. They will transform the back of the adjoining fireplace so it looks more like a piece of furniture and less like a mistake. New slipcovers for the country-style sofas, plus warm earthtones for the walls and various accessories will further cozy up the room. Here's how the team gets it done:
Host and interior designer Lee Snijders visits a salvage store, where he finds two console tables and two chairs to help fill the space in the room. He converts a teak chest into a TV cabinet by cutting out a panel in the front and installing a shelf inside. He then adds trim to the new edges to give the piece a finished look.
Design coordinator Charles Burbridge creates an original art piece using a foam sphere and decorative glass discs (figure A). He first coats the sphere in artists canvas primer (available at most art-supply stores). This coating will transform the foam into a nonporous work surface. He attaches the glass discs using an adhesive specifically for glass (figure B) and then covers the sphere in grout, wiping off the excess while it's still wet. Once the piece is dry, he wipes it down again with a damp cloth to remove any remaining grout residue.
Charles then gets to work transforming the back of the fireplace. He creates a faux-marble finish by using a mottling technique to add a glaze to the top. He adds another layer of paint to soften the mottled finish and uses a feather technique to give the surface the appearance of marble (figure C). He creates architectural impact by adding balusters and a shelf. A mirror and accessories add a finishing touch (figure D).
Lee gives the plantation shutters Old-World appeal by first sanding them to create texture and depth after the paint is applied. Once the paint is dry, he gives the shutters a weathered look (figure E) by removing some of the paint with hardened paintbrushes. He attaches carved appliques to the sides for contrast and character. The consoles he got at the salvage store are placed behind each of the family’s two sofas and the chairs to create a simple sitting area against a wall.
