Brooke Channon introduces designer Mike Patrick, who created a Northern Plains-style office that is both sophisticated and rustic. Natural materials like leather, hand-woven wools, buckskin and aged woods are used for custom furniture, while expensive specialized artwork adds to the western flavor.

Transforming the Makeover Room

Taking the steps below, designer Phyllis Bowie guided the transformation of a disorganized extra bedroom into a comfortable home office in earth tones, with western touches like kilim rugs, stenciled furniture and a faux suede window treatment:

  • Gave the room a new coat of paint (Benjamin Moore: Capri Coast).
PHOTO
  • Hung faux suede curtains, shredded at the bottom and hung with a faux pelt detail curtain rings.
  • Used a rust wool kilim area rug to define the space in front of the desk.
  • Added half-round molding to the front panel of a mahogany-stain desk to create a custom wood detail, and added interest with an olive green stencil design in the corners.
  • Dressed a plain no-arm chair with a faux hide and hammered nail detail.
  • PHOTO
  • Created a credenza by combining three pieces: a cabinet with doors and two narrow bookcases. The doors of the cabinet were stenciled with a poppy flower design.
  • Placed an antler lamp with a stenciled shade on the credenza (the stenciling coordinates with the pattern used on the desk).
  • Beside the window, hung a vertical painting with rust tones and a primitive frame.
  • PHOTO
  • Hung an earth-toned rug behind the desk and added good luck horseshoes beside it for the western look.
  • Placed a small-scale bookcase behind the desk ($30) and added a rustic lamp and dried flower arrangement.
  • Hung a cowboy picture over the bookcase.

  • Used a black leather chair and ottoman in the corner, with a red patterned rug draped over the back of the chair.
  • Finished the corner behind the chair with a large green silk plant.
