Before: This dark, '70s kitchen is described as "a little tacky" by the homeowners. They have disorganized cupboards, fake wood cabinets and a linoleum backsplash, which they wouldn't even like on the floor!

After: The updated kitchen is now full of old-fashioned charm. Rich-looking molding and fresh paint transforms the cabinets, plastic bonding paint covers the backsplash and a family table is given new life for the next generation.

Before: With a second child on the way, the homeowners need to make this unpleasant kitchen the heart of their home.

After: The kitchen is now a unified and uncluttered space with soft colors and a simple feeling that reminds the homeowners of their own childhoods.
Homeowners Todd and Kelly Baesen's kitchen has a bad case of the '70s. It's filled with imitation wood cabinets, a cramped seating area and a dated linoleum backsplash making the heart of their home a heartache. Designer Karen McAloon helps turn this dark kitchen into a warm and cozy place. By adding molding, painting the cabinets, sewing curtains from napkins and painting Kelly's inherited dining table, they create a warm, old-fashioned kitchen space using the items they already own.

paint: cabinet base coat (Standish White HC-32); cabinet top coat (Onondaga Clay 1204--formula: mix 1/3 paint with 2/3 varnish and add a small amount of water for striae effect); ceiling (White Dove); walls (Waterbury Cream HC-31) Benjamin Moore
