Relocating to a new part of the country can mean exciting new changes, but what about those things you can't bear to leave behind, those things that make a house a home? If you're like artist Heather Gauthier, you take them with you. Gauthier and her husband Randy love the warm tropical feel and family ties of south Texas. So when they left San Antonio for a nondescript Chicago apartment, they packed their living area with their favorite Texas things and brought a little country to the city.
The theme is a tropical/country kitsch mix filled out with lots of family photos, thrift-store finds and handmade accents. She painted the walls a soft celery green hue but added dimension with painted patterns of tropical flowers and diamonds in darker shades. In the dining space, she gave one wall a beach-towel look with painted stripes in bright colors. The dining table is her own creation--she pieced together 105 handpainted tiles with tropical scenes onto a countertop and added legs.
