Lowering the height of the counter that houses the cooktop makes the range easier to use and adds interest to the line of cabinetry.Host Joan Kohn visits the renovated kitchen of Bert and Myra Gold, who used a soft beige, variegated Italian ceramic floor tile as the inspiration for their kitchen's new look. When they discovered replacing their old flooring with the Italian tiles would require removing the cabinets, they decided to redo the entire kitchen. Working with designer Ed Stough, they created a bright kitchen neither too contemporary or traditional in its design.
- To avoid a stark white room but still lighten up the space, a creamy off-white color was chosen for cabinetry and appliances that complement the beige of the floor tiles. The sides of the cabinets are finished with beadboard, which softens the look and adds interest.
- Counters are a variegated granite, and the splash is a cream-colored tumbled marble.
- The elliptical-shaped undermount sink adds counter space, since its biggest dimension is from front to back rather than side to side.
- The roll-top appliance garage is used to "hide junk," according to the owners, rather than conceal appliances.
- An underused corner desk was transformed by replacing the knee space under the counter with wide drawers.
