Designer Finals : Episode HDSF-107 -- More Projects »

Before: The homeowners say their family room needs to be designed and defined, but think an interior designer would cost a lot of money so they entrust the task to a student designer.

After: Dividing the space into two sections--one for adults, the other for kids--gives each area a purpose, while more storage in the form of bookshelves by the fireplace and a cabinet with baskets behind the couch keeps it free of clutter.

Before: The way the room is currently arranged doesn't allow the family to enjoy the main focal point of the room, which is the fireplace.

After: Moving the two couches to the other side of the room opens up the smaller area for the kids and all their toys. Felt pieces glued to the existing rug make a fun roadway for the children.
Stacy and Barney Howard, along with their two children, Sami and Cody, are in need of a family room makeover and they're willing to risk the room revamp to a student still in design school, Shivani Gupta. Gupta wants to define the space and break it into separate areas--one for grown-ups and one for kids. She transforms the space by adding built-ins, a new wall color, reupholstering the current furniture and creating a fun kid rug. In the end, she makes this family room the TV/living/kids' room it needs to be in just two days and with $2,000.

After some hesitation for sentimental reasons, the homeowner's prized mantel, a salvaged piece of wood from his great grandfather's shipping business, was successfully turned into a coffee table using iron plant holders for legs.
