For a modern room, use a silver finish; for a classic room, use gold; and for a woodsy room like this one, use wood and tree fixtures. For this lodge makeover, the lamps have wrought iron or twig bases. Hirsch has lampshades that fit the lamps perfectly, but they're too dark for the room, so she makes some cut-outs to look like old Western-style lampshades and lines the insides with oil paper. Also, when you're buying lampshades, don't just think about the color of the shade; think about the light it's going to cast.
