Before and After: Moroccan Oasis Bedroom Redesign

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1109 -- More Projects »
Now that teenager Rebecca Gaynon is getting a little older she wants a room that suits her personal sense of style. It’s time for the ruffles and dolls to go and with a little help from the Design on a Dime team, Rebecca is ready to transform her little-girl room into a moody, Moroccan oasis.

The Dilemma
Rebecca’s room has great potential, but the space lacks style. Powder-blue walls and a twenty-foot ceiling don’t provide the moody, intimate feeling she’d like for her personal space. The room has a built-in desk that is currently doing double duty as a homework space and a place to do her makeup. The loft area above her room houses her doll collection but the space is otherwise unused. She hates the small sofa she currently has but needs seating for hanging out with her friends.

The Solution
Host and interior designer Kristan Cunningham gets with design coordinators Dave Sheinkopf and Spencer Anderson to create a Casbah feeling using rich, jewel-toned paint, fabric and accessories with a Moroccan motif. The recessed area around the built-in desk is painted rich plum and accented using stamps and gold paint from a craft store.

Cunningham creates Moroccan-inspired faux wall tapestries with paint and stencils.
Cunningham then creates Moroccan-inspired wall tapestries by painting panels on the powder-blue walls using the rich, plum color and craft stamps. She then "hangs" them using gold cording to give them an authentic feel. Fabric swags are draped from high above and attached with simple plant hooks on the wall below where a new, richly colored canopy and bedding add sophistication and style. The sofa is moved into the loft and layered in authentic sari fabrics to turn the area into a cozy and exotic space where Rebecca can entertain friends.

Anderson gives a thrift-store vanity a Moroccan makeover by painting it with oil-based purple paint and stenciling the area behind the knobs with traditional Moroccan shapes in gold. He adds an exotic curved bench and a black mirror with carved wooden doors to complete the look. He then hangs a punched-metal candleholder fitted with a light kit over the built-in desk to create lighting that sprinkles the space with glowing shapes.

Sheinkopf gives the room traditional Moroccan detail by creating eight-pointed star cutouts to hang on either side of the new vanity using medium-density fiberboard, a trammel, a carpenter’s square and a jigsaw. After sanding away any rough edges, pieces are given a base coat of red paint and sponged with gold. He also gives the room’s built-in drawers Moroccan flair with stencils and knobs to coordinate with the rest of the room.
