Keep old albums in their sleeves. It not only protects them, but makes them worth more.
In 1966, The Monkees TV show premiered on NBC and the pre-Fab Four--Davey, Mickey, Mike and Peter--were a hit. One collector today is still a huge fan of the Monkees and has a big collection to prove it. Ed Reiley has Monkees lunchboxes, tapes and anything else he can find with the name on it. More than 600 pieces line the walls of his family room and office, all due to his love for the Monkees TV show. He never though this show about a rock band would start a 30-year obsession.

Here are some quick tips on how to start your own collection:

  • Vinyl is valuable! A sealed copy of the Monkees 1966 debut album, The Monkees, can sell for $85 or more.

  • A rare item is a mono pressing of 1968's The Birds, The Bees, and the Monkees. This special-edition limited piece is known to sell for $500.

  • A lunchbox and thermos that survived the '60s is a real find, especially if it was never used. Expect to pay up to $1,000 if you are lucky enough to find one untouched!
