Project by Randy Singleton from Boca Raton, Fla.
Boca Raton artist Randy Singleton comes from a family of self-trained artists so it's no surprise that he eagerly experiments with many mediums and projects knowing no bounds. His time is spent creating everything from chandeliers to murals, as well as whatever small pieces he can dream up, such as his latest sunset themed wall sconce.
Materials:
3/4" grade A maple or birch plywood
sandpaper (fine, medium, 1" belt fine)
1/16" cold rolled steel
clear geissen glass
5/8" round steel rod
5" steel grinding wheel
latex primer
metal primer
spray enamel paint
acrylic airbrush paint
clear enamel paint
battery-operated florescent light
Velcro
wood filler
picture mounts
Steps:
1. Cut plywood and steel the same size.
2. Draw a design on the steel sheet (figure A) and plasma cut out (figure B).
3. Cut and weld steel rods and glass stanchions to the back of the steel sheet.
4. Grind schlag off of steel.
5. Flatten the steel sheet by clamping it to a flat piece of wood.
6. Position the metal design over the plywood to determine where to drill holes to fit the rods (figure C).
7. Drill holes in the plywood and double check to make sure it fits the steel piece.
8. Seal the sides of the plywood with wood filler.
9. Sand and prime the wood.
10. Airbrush the wood to resemble a sunset (orange, pink, blue, yellow) (figure D). Then clear seal the wood.
11. Spray-paint the metal design with primer; then spray-paint with black, purple and black again (figure E).
12. Add picture-hanging mounts to the back of the wood.
