Modern Touches
Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-1212 -- More Projects »
Designer Linda Allen's Hollywood home was built in the '50s and with a little remodernization she was able to take it back to that era with a design twist. She removed walls in the living room in order to create a 1950s Hawaiian-style home with an open floor plan. She embellished the mid-century detailing with a Japanese influence by keeping everything small in scale. Accessories are void of color so you concentrate on the shape; furnishings feature sleek lines with minimal ornamentation. The sofa mimics the low profile of the coffee table. The soft earthy color palette bridges the gap between the contemporary pieces and the Asian styling. Allen designed two of the table lamps which feature an interesting fluting effect using an upside-down bell-shaped lampshade.
Since the dining room is completely open to the living space, Allen purchased a set of blond wood mid-century furniture that could be used in both rooms--the buffet is used in the dining room and three shelving units are used for display space on the far wall in the living room.
The kitchen is still very much like a 1950s space in that she kept the metal cabinets, only updating them with buttercream yellow and soft blue paint. Modern updates include recessed lighting and new cabinets. Four box-shaped backlit display areas hold different martini glasses; the boxes pull-out to reveal storage behind each display.
An artistic metal staircase leads downstairs to an office area, which leads into the guest bedroom. The noticeable design difference is that woods go from a light, Japanese look to a dark, Marrakesh style. The bed is the focal point with its graceful curved posts. Two Moroccan-style crystal-embellished pendants disperse the light for a prism-like effect. The sitting area is comprised of a low table and multicolored "puffs," which resemble miniature round ottomans.
