Long Kitchen/Family Room Wall Solutions

Follow these tips for decorating a wall that divides your kitchen and family room.

If you have a long wall that's part of your kitchen and an attached family room, here are some decorating solutions:

Install trim to make a clear divider between the two rooms using finish nails after drilling pilot holes along the piece (don't use glue in case you want to change the wall treatments later). Use a fluted piece of trim to imitate the look of a column or a smaller style with a higher profile. Even a small wallpaper border could be hung vertically for the same effect. For this latter idea, it's best to also use the paper vertically in other areas of the room like around the door and window frames for continuity.

Use similar wall coverings (wallpaper or paint) for both rooms in a soft and neutral color/pattern. This makes the transition from the kitchen to the family room closer in color and therefore less noticeable.

Choose the same colors for the furnishings and even the same window treatments in both rooms to expand the two spaces even further.
