Before: This makeshift office is in a small area of the home's living room and it needs to function better as the husband/father's main office. The space is used by the entire family and is right off the entry so they want it to look good as well.

After: A new desk and hutch create a more functional office and a matching lateral file (near the door) cleverly disguises paperwork. The simple tack board with painted letters keeps daily information handy.

Before: The sheer window treatments don’t hold up to the bold pattern on the couches, which are staying, so the windows need more attention.

After: Neutral carpeting tones down the elaborate furniture pattern and cherry tables balance the weight of the pieces as well. Simple pinch-pleated drapes add softness and don't compete with the couches.
Matt Fox and Shari Hiller transform a congested living room and makeshift office space into a convenient, functional home office. They update the track lighting system and bring in new furniture to make the office area far more practical. They also add bulk to the windows and change the carpeting, but leave the walls as they are because they look good. Although it is a complete makeover, Hiller and Fox show how to capitalize on what is already good, as well as change or upgrade items that require attention.
