Layering The Table

Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-1205 -- More Projects »
Designer John Roberts created a layered table out of things he already had in his own home and garden to create a unique garden-style table. Here's how you can do it:

Table
Drape a table with coordinating fabrics. Build the place settings in the following order: charger plates with bay leaves underneath, dinner plates with colorful linen dish towels (to be used as napkins) and bowls.

Centerpiece
Place a large terra-cotta saucer in the center of the table. Wrap chicken wire around the top of a 24-inch tall tree stump to form a crude bowl. Place the stump in the center of the saucer. Line wire with moss and plant with fresh herbs. Add color with lemons, rutabaga and candles.

Buffet
Stack terra-cotta saucers and upside-down pots. Decorate the bottom pot with herbs, use the second layer to serve hors d'oeuvres and use the top layer for candles. Tip: Rub brown shoe polish on white candles for an aged effect. Use a large pot to serve drinks and hide the ice with herbs.
