The Solution
Interior designer Kristan Cunningham, along with design coordinators Dave Sheinkopf and Spencer Anderson, paint the walls a taupe-green for a traditional backdrop. An upholstered bench with storage for books underneath divides the room into a seating area and a piano/entry area. A sofa is brought in from another room and slipcovered with pillows that coordinate with the bench cushion and rug. The fireplace is toned down with a tint of raw umber glaze, which picks up the green tone in the wall color. Botanical prints over the mantel may have come from a garage sale, but they add a touch of traditional elegance to the room. The existing rug and its rusty red, gold and greenish taupe inspire the color scheme and tie everything together.
