A fireplace needs a large-scale item to draw attention to it and anchor it in the room. Hirsch mixes the paint and compound, which creates a textured, thicker paint. She rolls that onto a canvas and lets it dry. Then she applies some small pieces of gold leaf for an accent. To bring in some of the browns from the furnishings, she paints some squares with a brown, translucent glaze. Adding geometric shapes ties in a contemporary look to the abstract artwork.
