The Overhang:
- Cut two dowels to the desired length. These posts will support the overhang. Stain the dowels, let them dry, and use a marker to make squiggles at regular intervals around each dowel to mimic bamboo segments.
- The overhang itself is made of pieces of half-round molding cut in random lengths and attached to a piece of plywood cut to the width of the bed. Stain the molding, let the pieces dry, and nail them to the board, one nail at each end of a piece. Tip: Add a light under the panel for reading in bed.
- Attach the overhang to the wall with two hinges at the back so that it will hang at the correct angle.
The Window Effect:
- At the head of the bed, hang a poster of your child's choosing — a wild animal or a jungle scene.
- To avoid the expense of framing, frame the poster with molding applied directly to the wall.
- To complete the window effect, attach two shutters to the wall, one on either side of the poster.
The Walls:
- Children can help paint jungle foliage on the walls.
- To add dimension, nail small blocks of S4S lumber at random places on the walls. Add lengths of half-round molding to these for "stems," to make it look as if bamboo were growing right up the walls.
