Jungle Room Makeover

After

Designer Nan Sloan creates a jungle escape in a bedroom shared by two brothers, ages 9 and 11. Taking inspiration from the wild kingdom wallpaper border, Nan paints the walls a deep green. A cozy seating area is created under the window with a window seat and a fake palm tree created with a yucca branch and silk palm leaves (both from a floral supply store). To make the window seat, Nan paints a cabinet black and adds bun feet and animal-style napkin rings for door pulls. It's topped with a cushion made from a piece of foam wrapped in a zebra-patterned shower curtain.

The beds are put back in place and dressed with new animal-print ensembles. Tent canopies, made from painter's drop cloth and 1" x 2" boards, are suspended from the ceiling with wire. The drum-style nightstand in between the beds consists of an old nail keg with an oilcloth-covered top. Two coats of magnetic paint are applied to the wall over both desks and framed with bamboo. Nan cuts animal shapes (traced from cookie cutters) out of magnetic paper to hold photos to the wall. Other design elements include two yard-sale chairs painted with animal-print motifs and photo boxes for storage.

Before the makeover this bedroom was bare and empty. The boys needed a space that reflected their youthful energy and style. Now the space is completely transformed into a jungle oasis these boys can enjoy for years to come.
