Island-Inspired Living Room

Design on a Dime : Episode DOD-1405 -- More Projects »
Nakuma and Kumau Talbott put their redecorating plans on the back burner when they became new parents, but now they are ready to get back to it, starting with the living room. The Design on a Dime team signs on to transform this couple's space into a tropical retreat they can share with their little bundle of joy.

Before: The space was too neutral and awkwardly arranged.

After: A new focal point and vibrant color bring the islands home.
The Dilemma
The living and dining areas are open to one another, so the space needs a definitive floor plan with cohesive style. They'd like to shift the room's focal point from the non-working fireplace to the television, and they'd like to spruce up the space in the process.

The Solution
The team will move the furniture toward the center of the room and create a wall unit for the entertainment components that will camouflage the fireplace. They'll use the existing draperies for island inspiration and deep stain colors and tropical materials to bring the islands to the mainland. The whole theme will extend from the living area into the dining room. Here's how the team gets it all done.

The walls in the space get a coat of a warm cognac hue. Rich wood tones in the new entertainment center (figure A) as well as the cocktail and side tables evoke a tropical vibe.

Design coordinator Charles Burbridge designs wall art (figure B) for both spaces using dried plant materials framed against a burlap backdrop.

Sheers are added to the existing window treatments (figure C) to create privacy and allow light into the space. New bamboo rods add a tropical touch.
The vibrant magenta tone in the drapery fabric is used for new throw pillows on the neutral sofa and loveseat (figure D). A natural-fiber rug (figure E) underneath the cocktail table defines the seating area. Interior designer Summer Baltzer gives the rug a contemporary vibe by adding a painted black border.

Ebony-hued, carved-look lamps (figure F) add tropical style while illuminating the new space.
Island accessories (figures G and I) throughout both spaces create a cohesive look. A new centerpiece for the dining table (figure H) gives that space added impact.
