AfterWall Paint – $54
To start the makeover, the bare walls are painted a rich mocha-raspberry color. The contrast of the dark walls and the light ceiling really highlight the unique architecture in the room.
- wall paint: Benjamin Moore's Garrison Red, HC66, eggshell finish
Headboard and Bedding – $22
A discarded tabletop found in the garbage is converted into a headboard. The tabletop is cleaned up, and the edges are painted white to cover up some blemishes and to visually separate the headboard from the wall. The headboard is fastened to the walls with screws.
Two new floral shams are added to give more presence to the bed and to match the scale of the headboard.
- fabric for shams: SR Harris Mill Ends Outlet
Memory Nightstands – $43
To create the nightstands, two old crates are painted white, and large picture frames are used for the tops. The frames are fastened to the crate with hinges so the photographs can easily be changed. Two white lamps found in the homeowner's basement are added to the top of each nightstand.
- picture frames: Michaels
Dressers – $28
The homeowner's dressers are given new life with a couple coats of white paint.
- paint: Benjamin Moore – White Dove/Satin Impervo
Window Treatments – $11
Simple wooden cornices are added to the windows to keep the room from becoming too feminine.
Storage Units – $256
The faux built-in cabinets are created by hanging shelves between two store-brought cabinets and the walls. Ready-to-assemble screen molding adds detail to the plain cabinet doors.
- cabinets: Ikea – Robin White Wardrobe, model 200-320-76
- molding: Menards – pine fluted screen molding - 4174961
Bench Seat – $27
The homeowner's cedar chest is painted the same white as the dressers. The upholstered seat is re-covered in a crisp striped fabric. The chest is placed in front of the window between the two cabinets to make a window seat.
- paint: Benjamin Moore – White Dove/Satin Impervo
Laundry Basket Cubby – $24
Additional storage is added underneath the dormer window. The leaf from the tabletop that became the headboard is made into a shelf and hung just below the window. An apron is hung in front of the shelf, creating a great hiding place for laundry baskets.
