House Beautiful Kitchen
Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-1207 -- More Projects »
Designer Peter Dunham was challenged to make the brand new kitchen in the House Beautiful show house appear as though it was original to the 1920s Tudor home. The result is a combination of Mediterranean pizzazz with the classic New England lines suited to the style of the house.
Dunham's goal was to make the space as bright and vibrant as possible and he achieved that by covering the floor in a colorful hand-stenciled French tile featuring a Mediterranean design. From there, he went with a dramatic palette of red, gold and black.
The countertops are soapstone, which will quickly achieve a rich patina for an old-fashioned look. The fireplace is the focal point at the far end and is flanked by built-in cupboards. The cupboard doors are outfitted with chicken wire and French country-style fabric, evoking a farmhouse effect. The large red island adds a pop of color to the space. The refrigerator is functional both inside and out with chalkboard and cork panels adhered to the doors.
