After: Sleek lines and vintage-Vegas style create a winning look.Bachelor Ken Hardy likes to host his friends for an occasional poker game. He has a great place to play, but he'd like the space to be hipper and a bit more versatile for entertaining. The Design on a Dime team signs on to give him a fabulous retro-style poker lounge.
The Dilemma
Ken's poker space is also his living room. When he hosts a game, he has to move all his furniture around and pull folding chairs out of the closets. He hasn't gotten around to doing much decorating, so the look in the space is pretty basic.
The Solution
A sophisticated blue tone will be used for the walls to set the mood. Simple accent mirrors add more style to the space and are further accentuated by a vertical stripe of contrasting paint. Multifunctional furnishings with a retro-'50s feel and a versatile dining table will provide space to entertain without rearranging every time. Sleek fabrics and modern lines will create a vintage-Vegas vibe.
The new dining table quickly transitions to poker mode with an overlay that stores inside the tabletop. Padded benches can be moved around the space when not being used at the dining table. Rich brown draperies give Ken's existing matchstick-style shades a little flair.
Design coordinator Spencer Anderson fashions a media console out of store-bought shelves. Ken's friends create an original art piece in vibrant red and black tones, which creates a focal point on the large wall above the TV. While design coordinator Dave Sheinkopf designs a custom sofa that quickly converts from sofa to daybed. Sleek grayish-blue fabric complements the piece's modern lines.
Taupe-colored cocktail ottomans are used in place of Ken's old coffee table. The padded cubes can be used for propping up feet or for additional seating around the room. A graphic rug anchors the seating area in the center of the space. A few simple accessories and a funky light fixture complete the winning look.
