Hosts Matt Fox and Shari Hiller search for inspiration and ideas for weekend projects by visiting a model home. They duplicate a great textured wall technique, show how to build a new tabletop and explain how to coordinate vent covers with a room's design for a more professional look.

Staining/Painting Vent Covers

Materials and Tools:

cold air return vent
spray metal primer with an orange tint
stain or paint (latex satin)
foam brushes

Steps:

1. Spray the primer on the vent to prepare the surface for stain or paint. Let dry.

2. Apply the stain or paint with a foam brush. To build up depth of color, let the stain sit on the piece without removing the excess (check for drips). Allow it to dry and apply another coat.

3. For the painted version, apply the color with a small one-inch brush working on the vent slats first. Finish the top and sides and make sure to check for drips. Let dry and apply another coat if necessary.
