Kentucky Farm Gourd Art
Country Style : Episode COS-602 -- More Projects »
Jennifer Zingg didn't know what to do with some choice gourds from her grandfather's Kentucky gourd farm. For years, she and her husband, Jeff, shifted the gourds around every time they redecorated, moved or needed more storage. Jeff was ready to throw them away, but after her grandfather died, Zingg felt a stronger connection to these now very dry and very old gourds and decided to make use of what she had--the gourds and her artful eye--and fell into a different kind of art form. Using paint, a wood burner and wood glue, Zingg has created everything out of gourds, from the very fine flower vase or bowl to a very creepy looking super-sized bug.
She starts by drawing the design onto the dried gourd then outlines the design with an industrial-strength woodburner. She uses a variety of paints, markers and leather dyes to bring the design to life. Often she embellishes them even further by adding carved detailing, copper wire, fibers and glass beads.
