Flat and glazed stripes add a bit of interest to the walls without being distracting and they are very easy to accomplish.
Materials:

painter's tape
artist's paintbrush
tape measure
long level
pencil
4" flat brush
stencil (optional)
paint (flat base coat: Lightweight Beige SW6092); glaze for stripes (Dutch Boy Technique Glaze) Sherwin-Williams

Steps:

1. Start with a flat-painted wall surface. Let dry.
2. For the stripes, hold a tape measure vertical to the ceiling and mark where you want each stripe to be. Use a long level and a light pencil to draw the horizontal lines, and then tape them off.
3. Apply the glaze to the taped-off areas using a flat brush and a crosshatch pattern to fill the areas in. Pull the tape off before the glaze dries completely.
4. Use an artist's brush and more glaze to write favorite words or phrases (use a stencil if desired) in the striped area(s) not covered in glaze.
