Fresh Kitchen Facelift
Kitchen Trends : Episode HKTRD-106 -- More Projects »
Kitchen designer Jim Dove loved the architectural features of his Colonial home but not the 10x10 pink and floral 1960s-era kitchen. So he gave the room a facelift, bringing in updated appliances, a functional layout and lots of contemporary style. He knocked down three walls to create a large living kitchen with plenty of room for cooking and entertaining. He sectioned the room into three distinct areas: cleanup, dining and prepping. He says, "When youre cooking, youre at the center of the event. Whats nice about this is the eleven-foot long island. I was able to fit in everything I needed to cook with. I have a really nice spice area to the right of my cooking and in the drawers right below the cooktop is my knife drawer."
Everything is within two steps and in a good kitchen design the less walking you do, the better it is. The island also has a vegetable sink and a gas range with a vent that raises out of the counter with the touch of a button. Two different colors of limestone were used on the island to separate the two areas. He used a Jerusalem gold limestone on the cooking area and a seagrass limestone on the upper countertop, which he also repeated on the backsplash in the cleanup area.
