What do you get when you mix the beautiful French countryside with home design? Designer Stephanie Fontana defines the elements of French country design. Vibrant colors are key, especially when combined with patterns such as toile, checks, stripes and landscapes. Fontana shows how to incorporate the French country feel into your home without compromising sophistication:

French country is a lifestyle with homes that are comfortable, warm and very inviting. Fabrics in the vivid tones of yellow, green, red and blue of the landscape are the trademarks of French country style.

Less vivid hues are also used in French country style. Here, rose is the dominant color in toile and plaid fabrics, which is accented with green in the pillows.

Rustic farm tables blend form with function, but simplicity doesn't mean style has to be sacrificed. A French country table has fresh flowers in potted jars, pewter (it's easier to maintain than silver) and a natural touch using carved chairs with rush seats.
  • Did you ever want to go on a vacation to the south of France where life is a celebration and homes have a look of comfort and sophistication? This design style is called French country and for generations, the French have looked to their country's picturesque landscapes for inspiration when designing their homes.

Animals are used over and over in French country style and the rooster is the most traditional.
  • French country furnishings are often handcrafted from solid woods. They can be dressy or rustic, big or small. Armoires are typical in the bedroom, but it's a multifunctional piece that can certainly be used throughout the house, from storing linens to disguising the TV.
