Floral Cake Centerpiece

These floral cakes, which are simple to make and look good enough to eat, make wonderful hostess gifts or birthday presents.

Materials:

flowers like carnations (which look like frosting), roses, hydrangeas and Gerbera daisies; avoid seasonal flowers like lilies, which won't lay flat
4" brick of floral foam
craft knife
pinch of sugar or aspirin
bleach
scissors
chrysanthemums or daisies
empty toilet paper roll
wooden skewers
decorative paper
hot-glue gun
plastic plate
smaller round of foam

Steps:

Cut a circle out of the 4-inch floral foam brick with a craft knife. It will look small, but when flowers are added it will look much larger.

Soak the foam in room-temperature water to which sugar or aspirin has been added for nutrition, and a drop or two of bleach to kill bacteria.

Cut flowers, leaving about an inch of stem from the bud.

Starting at the bottom of the foam, insert the flowers all around the foam for even coverage. They should be placed close enough so that their petals overlap slightly. Also be sure to insert the stem straight in, rather than at an angle.

Add two more rows of flowers, alternating colors if you wish.

Fill in the top of the foam with flat flowers like chrysanthemums or daisies.

To make the stand for the second tier, you will need an empty toilet paper roll and wooden skewers.

Make two slits in the cardboard, each one a few inches from the end.

Run the skewer through the slits, starting the skewer inside the roll at one end, coming out through the first slit and back into the roll through the second slit.

Cover the rolls with decorative paper.

Make and cover two rolls and hot glue them to a plastic plate.

Insert the rolls on top of the foam with the plate side up, using the skewers to secure everything in place.

Make another flower layer exactly the same way you did the bottom layer, using a smaller round of foam, soaking it in the water with sugar or aspirin and bleach.

Fill with flowers and place on top of the plate. These arrangements travel well in hat boxes.
