Faux Inlay Table Design

A faux inlay design made using stain and tape gives new life to an old table.

Use thin painter's tape and stain to create the look of inlay on a tabletop.
Materials:

table
palm sander or 220-grit sandpaper
stain
rags
1/4" painter's tape
credit card or spoon

Steps:

1. Clean and sand the table. Remove the dust with a tack cloth or damp rag.

2. Use painter's tape to create the desired design around the perimeter of the top of the table. Use a spoon or credit card to burnish the edges so the stain doesn't bleed underneath.
3. Stain the table, applying it right over the tape. Let dry thoroughly and apply a second coat (figure A).

4. Allow the stain to dry overnight, and then carefully remove the masking tape to reveal the pattern (figure B).
