After
Host Joan Steffend and designer Susan Weber turn an unused den into a space that both dad and daughter can use for under $500.

Fireplace Surround and Mantel–$20
To give the fireplace a more symmetrical look the large cabinet door on the right side of the fireplace is cut in half vertically. The upper half of the door is moved to the lower left side of the fireplace to match the lower right. A new paneled door is placed over the cabinet where the door was removed to cover the hole and to blend in seamlessly with the rest of the wall. A mantel is added above the fireplace for horizontal balance.

Chair Rail–$10
Molding is hung around the perimeter of room to create a chair rail.

Wall Paint–$54
The walls are given a two-tone treatment: a cream color is painted below the chair rail and blue above the chair rail.

Daybed–$42
A twin bed is converted into a daybed and given a chaise effect. To create a mattress cover for the bed, foam is sandwiched between two pieces of material. The material is then sewn together using an upholstery needle and kite string, thus giving the edges of the mattress cover a tufted appearance.

Drapery–$36
Existing hardware is used to hang new linen drapery, and new finials are added to update the look.

Monogram Chairs–$41
Straight Parsons chairs found at a tag sale are re-covered. Iron-on transfer computer paper is used to create the monogram. The monogram is then ironed on to the chair.

Glass-Topped Tables–$70
A tag-sale table becomes the new coffee table after some special details are added, like a blue-painted base and a stenciled glass top. Stick letters are adhered to the underside of the glass (making sure the letters are facing in the correct direction). Then the table is sprayed with fogging. When the glass is dry the stencils are removed and the glass is flipped over and placed in the table base. Another tag-sale table is painted with a faux linen treatment and used as an accent table.

CD Cabinet–$10
A CD storage cabinet is hung horizontally above the daybed.

Wall Clock–$22
To create a unique wall clock, two different sized floral wreath frames are spray-painted black and hung on the wall one inside the other. The clock mechanism is hung in the middle. Roman numerals are printed out on the computer then adhered to small blocks of MDF (medium-density fiberboard) with spray mount. The numbers are then fastened to the wall using a staple gun.

Map Prints–$18
A large map is cut into six pieces. Six artist’s canvases are flipped over so the wood frame is facing up. The wood frames are painted black. Each piece of the map is glued into an artist canvas and sealed with decoupage glue.

Accent Pillows–$39

Accessories–$133

Total Cost–$495
