Fantasy Tour: Attic Redo

Bed & Bath Design : Episode BDE-1104 -- More Projects »
Host Joan Kohn tours the home of Ahron Solomon, who worked with architect Adolfo Perez to transform an attic space into a streamlined master suite. The goals of the renovation were to create a large, comfortable space for relaxing and watching television, and eliminate clutter with the use of built-ins. Luxurious materials, well-thought-out design details, and lots of natural light make the space both functional and inviting.

This spacious and contemporary master suite used to be an unfinished attic space.

Pear wood built-ins give the room a sleek look. The TV can be pulled forward and swiveled.

The toilet on the right and shower on the left are tucked behind two etched-glass doors framed by an arch.

The arch shape is repeated above the vanity sinks.
  • Design details like the raised panel ceiling, stained wood trim and carefully planned built-ins give the space an architecturally rich feeling.
  • Pear wood was an unusual choice for the wood elements in the room. The bed and side tables, ceiling trim, built-in cabinets and window seat are all made from the distinctive wood. The repeated use of the wood gives a feeling of continuity in the room.
  • The bath uses blue veined marble and blue glass tiles to create a luxurious feeling. Marble is used on the vanity counter and for the tub surround. Blue glass tiles cover the walls of the shower and the water closet. The sinks and faucets are polished nickel. The sink has a hammered finish to help hide water stains. The natural limestone floor adds a nice contrast to the polished surfaces in the room.
