Kitty Starling and Donna Mobley of the Interior Arrangement and Design Association dramatically revitalize a family room by rearranging its existing elements and bringing in a variety of furnishings and accessories from around the house. In addition to achieving better furniture placement, Starling and Mobley also add warmth and personality to the room. Featured strategies are listed below:
- First, the room is cleared of all furniture except the white sectional sofa, which is pulled out from the two walls it currently occupies. Bringing this large piece further into the room eliminates the feeling of distance created by its former position. In the corner behind the sofa, two matching floor lamps are placed in front of the window, and the blinds are raised to the same height as the tops of the lamps.
- Next, Starling and Mobley bring the contemporary leather chair and ottoman back into the room, and angle the pieces toward the sofa to form an inviting sitting area. Between the sofa and chair, the two add a unique stone bench (brought in from outside) to serve as a coffee table. This new addition is topped with a variety of interesting accessories.
- A grouping of artwork painted by the children's grandmother is arranged on the wall above the sofa to create a focal point, and another of her paintings is hung over the fireplace and accentuated with a variety of items on the mantel below.
- The room's built-in shelves get de-cluttered and reorganized with a variety of items gathered from other areas of the house. Once the shelves are in order, Starling and Mobley create a "children's corner" -- complete with a miniature table and two matching chairs -- near the room's large windows. Just behind this area, a large palm tree is added; the tall plant adds visual height to the space and emphasizes the striking view afforded by the windows. Colorful pillows and an oriental throw are added to the sofa to complete the redesign.
