Seven years ago, John and Deborah Derzy, their two daughters and their houseful of pets, including four birds, moved into a contemporary 3,300-square-foot home in Phoenix, Ariz. The Derzys love the house and its open floor plan, but when it comes to their large family room, the central gathering spot, they are uncertain about how to warm it up and tie it together with the rest of the house.
