AfterTo begin the makeover the designers use a light projector to project an image of bamboo poles into the corner and trace the design onto the walls with a pencil. Next, they trace the pencil lines with paintable caulk for a 3D effect. After it dries, they paint the walls a warm brownish orange hue and then use a of mixture brown and black acrylic paint and an artist's brush to add shadows to the bamboo design.
Next the designers enhance the neutral-colored ottoman with a colorful slipcover. Jewel-toned fabric is used to add color to the throw pillows and place mats are sewn together to create an area rug. A stylized floral design found on one of the pillow covers is replicated on the rug and painted with gold and silver markers.
A white trunk is found in the homeowner's attic and painted to match the other mahogany-colored elements in the room. The trunk is enhanced with a design created with more of the paintable caulk. Molding is added to the top and bottom and the top is updated with a new slipcovered foam cushion.
Decorative peg racks are attached to a custom painted valance to hold two layers of curtains.
A light-colored desk is spray-painted with dark red paint, then further darkened with a wash of black paint to match it to a mahogany-colored chair.
The artwork above the sofa consists of three clocks and a picture made out of clip art. The clocks are made out of 12" x 12" pieces of lumber, paint and clock mechanisms to show times in England, Mexico and Hawaii. The clip art image was printed from a computer and enlarged on a copier, then put on a painted blue background to bring color up on the wall.
Kim uses colored pencils and markers to make a paper lantern match the new colorful design.
Before the makeover this room was plain and colorless. With a few simple additions and a colorful wall treatment this space is transformed into an exotic den.
