Edible Topiaries
TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-1307 -- More Projects »
Entertaining expert Dana Christine tells how to make topiaries you can eat. They make an excellent addition to any dinner party or buffet table.
- Make a sweetheart centerpiece (figure A) by placing a plastic foam ball into a clay pot and inserting a wooden dowel. Wrap the heart with blue tape and place it onto the dowel. Push small flowers onto the outside of the heart with pushpins. Use toothpicks to attach strawberries. Fill the pot below with individually wrapped chocolates (figure B).
Make a vegetable centerpiece by hollowing out a votive-size hole in the top of a cabbage. Place a glass votive candleholder and candle in the hole, then light. Roast cocktail sausages on skewers over the flame for extra fun (figure C).Press wrapped candies onto a topiary plastic foam tree using stick pins (figure D). Top with lollipops if you like.
Make a colorful veggie topiary (figure E). Purchase a topiary form from a craft store. Wrap leafy lettuce leaves onto it with toothpicks, then cut small sweet peppers into fours and place in ice water. The ends will flair out like a lily. Press onto the topiary and place a cherry tomato into the center of the vegetable flower. Green onions also work nicely. Purple kale adds nice color.
