Innovative leaf place mats and artichoke napkin rings bring an unexpected touch to the holiday table.

Figure A
Floral designer Dale Rohman offers suggestions for holiday floral arrangements that go beyond the typical pine boughs and berries. He suggests adding holiday glitz to everyday plants like a split-leaf philodendron by edging the large leaves with glitter (figure A). Make a stripe of plain white glue along the edge (do not use hot glue, as it will burn the leaf) and sprinkle on the glitter. Shake off excess.

Artichoke Napkin Rings

Materials:

shower-curtain rings
ribbon
22-gauge wire
hot glue
baby artichokes
dried cranberries

Steps:

  1. Wrap plastic shower-curtain rings (snapped completely shut) with ribbon, starting the ribbon off with a little hot glue and also gluing down the tail piece.

Figure D
  • Insert a piece of floral wire into a miniature artichoke, going in on one side of the base and coming out on the other side (figure B).

  • Put a dab of hot glue on the base of the choke and position the wrapped ring between the ends of the wire. Twist the wire on one side around the ring, wrapping in one direction (figure C). Twist the other piece of wire around the artichoke, being sure to wrap in the opposite direction.

  • Hot glue a little piece of ribbon on both sides to hide the wires and glue on dried cranberries for a colorful contrast (figure D).

Lemon leaves (on bottom), eucalyptus and fresh rosemary form the base of the fresh garland.
    Fresh Mantel Dressing

A length of clothesline is the base to which fresh greens, fruit and flowers are wired for this unusual mantel arrangement.

    Materials:

    length of clothesline
24-guage florist paddle wire (wire wrapped around a wooden paddle)
    lemon leaves
    fresh eucalyptus leaves
    fresh rosemary
    St. John's Wort berries
    red and green apples
    wooden meat skewers
    red Gerbera daisies
    water tubes

    Steps:

    1. To attach leaves to the clothesline, take two branches of lemon leaves and arrange one going in each direction on the clothesline and wrap a few times with the paddle wire.

    2. Without cutting the wire, add the next layer of eucalyptus leaves, wrapping a few times with the wire.

    3. Continue adding and wrapping leaves and berries until the desired length of garland is reached. Arrange on the mantel.

    Figure E
  • To add accents of fruit and flowers, insert two meat skewers into the side of an apple and stick into the garland (figure E). You can also stack the apples, using the skewers to hold in place.

  • Insert Gerbera daisy stems into a water tube and arrange along the garland. If the water level is maintained in the tube, the flowers can last for up to two weeks.
