Steps:

1. Since the crown molding is mounted on walls without a flat ceiling, there isn't any place to attach the top of the molding (figure A). To remedy this, attach 2x2s (cut 2x4s) that are cut with an angle to match the angle of the crown molding to the wall. This provides ample surface area to nail the crown molding to.

2. To cut the 2x4 lumber so it's angled, make three separate cuts. First, make a 45-degree angle cut to remove one corner. Turn it around and repeat the same cut to remove the opposite corner, and then cut it in half lengthwise with a straight cut (figure B).
3. Nail the 2x2s to the wall along a level line and attach clips about every 18 inches along the top for the rope lighting.

4. Stain the crown molding and let dry. Determine which type of cut is necessary for each piece to fit correctly. Note: When using a miter saw for outside corner cuts, pretend that the base of the saw is the ceiling and the back plate is the wall. Nail the molding into place, and then fill the holes with putty using your fingers and a rag. Clip the rope lighting into place (figure C).
