Figure A

  • Antique doorknobs (figure A) are a great inexpensive way to hang drapes. You simply attach knobs and plates to the wall and hang a tab-top curtain from them. Pound knobs into washers to attach the knob to the plate. Hem up the fabric and pull tassels through a buttonhole and then hang over the knob.

  • Drawer pulls are another great way to add detail to a window. They come in many shapes and sizes. You simply screw them into the wall above the window. You can use either a tab-top curtain or your own fabric by cutting a small buttonhole opening in order to hang them (figure B).

    Figure C
  • If you choose not to have a curtain or drape-type window treatment, a shutter is a great decorative way to style an indoor window (figure C). Just attach to either side of your window. This is perfect for a room where you need less privacy but would like some attention drawn to the window. The shutter hold back can be used with the shutter, or as a tab-top curtain holder.

  • An old rowboat oar works well as a fun valance. Place over a curtain rod above your window to dress up the drapes. You could also use a baseball bat, hockey stick or pool cue.

    Figure D
  • Putting a wall anchor (figure D) into dry wall, if there is no framing behind it, is a good way to support your drapes and keep your walls intact.
