Hide CaptionShow CaptionHirsch applies a paint technique that brings a craftsman cottage style into the library.
Paint expert Danielle Hirsch prepares the walls by wiping them down with liquid sandpaper. This scuffs up the finish of a glossy surface so that paint adheres to it properly. It's the same effect as sanding, without all the work.

Once the area is clean and dry, she paints a gold color base coat. Hirsch continues the process by using a strie technique for the second coat of paint. She mixes one-third of a light brown paint color with one-third latex glaze and one-third water. She applies a coat of the transparent mixture and then drags a dry brush over the wet paint. This layers in the color.

For the final step, she uses another 1:1:1 mixture of a darker brown paint, latex glaze and water. She applies the mixture and then uses a wood grain tool over the wet surface to make the wood grain pattern.
