Hide CaptionShow CaptionTo maximize the space, the living and dining areas are switched.
The family wanted more seating, so two separate seating areas are created. Two new chairs are placed in front of the sliding-glass doors and the homeowners' existing living room furniture is moved to the platform. Area rugs also help to define each space. In the corner of the room, a custom-built cabinet and upper shelf give the room a polished look and provide the homeowners with extra storage and display space.

The walls around the raised platform are split horizontally into thirds and then painted three earthy colors. The lightest shade is on top and the darkest on the bottom to help ground the space. Crown molding between the stripes makes each color stand out. Soft, floral stencils are sponged onto each color with the pattern varying slightly within each stripe.
