With white walls, beige carpeting and hand-me-down furniture, this bedroom is a fairly blank slate. A design student uses color and custom-built furniture to create a cozy but contemporary style.

Hide CaptionShow CaptionThe white walls and beige carpeting don't add much style to this small, humdrum bedroom.
For homeowners Beth and Jared Baker, full-time jobs and graduate-school classes leave little time to decorate their home, especially their master bedroom. With white walls and hand-me-down furniture, the room has no style. Student designer Katie Arnold is ready to take this bland bedroom to another level. Her plan is to emphasize and create height with a low platform bed, two-toned paint job and a massive custom headboard. She also tackles the Bakers' disorganized closet.

The homeowners would really like a larger bed and some reading lights. Mostly, though, they want a calm style where they can retreat from their hectic lifestyle.
