Country Meets City Living
Country Style : Episode COS-405 -- More Projects »
A comfortable mix of family heirlooms and flea-market finds promotes a sense of timeworn comfort in Louis and Roddie Turner's living room and dining room, where country style meets city living.
The living room contains favorite family pieces including a loveseat the Turner's have had for over 20 years, now slipcovered in a floral fabric, and Roddie's grandmother's piano. She's enhanced the room's vintage look with silk balloon drapes she sewed out of store-bought panels. She used wired ribbon to create a crinkled, informal look.
A piece of decorative gingerbread trim from an old Victorian porch provides a focal point over the mantel. To conserve space, she created a study nook in a small closet by removing the door and adding shelves.
The dining room contains a French rosewood dining set topped with a colorful throw. The built-in buffet beneath the three windows is typical of a 1900s arts-and-crafts cottage. The piece was finished to resemble the look of a French pastry cart. She bleached the top, added a gray-blue stain to the front, replaced the hardware and added wood embellishments.
