Diane Kovacs says that when it comes to interior design, it's all in the details because that's what truly makes a space special. And no style offers more fresh and clever possibilities than country style. Her design philosophy is showcased beautifully in her New York City bedroom.
She wanted to create a haven from the city below so she decorated with country-style furnishings and fresh floral fabrics in soothing colors. She framed the large picture window with English country curtains, which are bound with a contrasting green and white plaid and detailed with an inset band of raspberry chintz. The curtains have an inner lining of English bump cloth, which is a heavy flannel originally made from the same cotton or flax used to make candlewicks. It was historically used in England and Scotland for extra warmth and to block the light during long summer nights. Kovacs used it in her curtains for extra weight so they would hang beautifully. The curtains are not meant to be drawn; instead, matchstick blinds are lowered for privacy.
The walls are covered in a beadboard-patterned wallpaper with a green border near the ceiling for visual interest. The bedspread is made of a Marseilles cloth, a white-on-white patterned fabric that features an elaborately quilted design. Country charm comes in the form of an antique quilt and a variety of pillows. The bed sits high up off the floor in order for her to enjoy the skyline view.
Furnishings include pieces of special meaning, including the painted secretary in the corner. Her mother had found it at a garage sale 40 years ago and as she sanded off the gray paint she discovered a beautiful handpainted floral design underneath. With the addition of chicken wire in the doors and new hardware, it looks like a family heirloom.
