After: Soft gray walls enhance the existing furnishings while sharp blue edges on the bookcases anchor their place in the room. Pictures and collectibles that were stuck in boxes now fill the room with memories and personal touches.

Before: Mary McNamara searched for three years for this striped beige and gray sofa fabric. It's getting lost against the white walls and the unfinished bookcases need some color as well.

After: The overbearing fireplace is scaled down with a covering of drywall and floating shelves add horizontal interest to the vertical feature. A new layout and the subtle paint treatment of bands of lighter gray around each wall makes for a rich, sophisticated look that's not too busy for this tight floor plan.
Homeowners Mary McNamara and Gordon Feller want to change their "safe" living room from sterile to stylish. Designer Karen McAloon remixes furniture and repurposes items around their house for a modern look. The cool and contemporary space gives these empty nesters an updated, comfortable room that reflects their style and personalities.
