Trouble was brewing in the kitchen of the home in Thousand Oaks, California. That's because (certain) safety precautions weren't taken when the cooktop was installed. It was placed too close to a combustible surface, and that almost resulted in a fire. Those homeowners were lucky.

Many newer homes have either gas or electric cooktops instead of a traditional stove. They're convenient and reasonably simple to install. But just like traditional stoves, some safety rules must be followed when installing a cooktop.

  • Non-combustible materials should always surround the cooktop.
  • An 18-inch minimum clearance is required above the cooktop for safety reasons.
  • Follow manufacturers directions for installation. If you have problems hire a professional.

Cooktops are convenient, energy efficient and they look great, but just remember: when it comes to proper instillation and safety, you have to cook by the book.
