The homeowners and Karen choose four main elements for the space: tan sofas, deep red walls and green and yellow accent colors. Mediterranean design is known for being colorful, so two accent colors are used. The room is rearranged to give some separation between the living and dining areas. Dark tables and a contemporary rug anchor the seating area. The floral pattern on the rug is more traditional, but because it is blown up to oversize portions, it has a very contemporary feel to it.

The dining room wall is the first thing guests see when they walk in the door, so McAloon wants it to be descriptive of the whole room. A multicolor mirror has all the warm tones in the room’s color palette and is very modern in its styling. The focal point of the room is the gorgeous stone fireplace. Before, it was hardly noticeable because of all the clutter piled on top. A general rule of thumb – if you have a fireplace that is made out of something gorgeous, keep your decorations simple and let the natural beauty shine through. The art hanging above the fireplace is returned to original spot, but a wooden frame is built into the recess to give the artwork more presence and help it integrate with the rest of the space.
